Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday launched the Rs 20,050 crore Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY) as a government objective of doubling farmers' income to boost production and exports in the fisheries sector.
Through video conference, the Prime Minister also initiated several other initiatives in the fisheries and animal husbandry sectors in Bihar. Modi launched e-Gopala, a mobile app that will provide solutions to farmers on issues related to livestock, and inaugurate a state-of-the-art semen station at Purnia with an investment of Rs 84.27 crore on 75 acres of land available in Bihar.
Following the launch, the Prime Minister held talks with farmers focusing on the livestock and fisheries sector. The PMO said on Wednesday- PMMSY is a flagship scheme for focused and sustainable development of the fisheries sector in the country, with an investment of Rs 20,050 crore for its implementation during 2020-21 to 2024-25, usually as a package from India Is an estimated investment of. The investment of Rs 20,050 crore under PMMSY is the highest ever in the fisheries sector.
Of this, an investment of about Rs 12,340 crore is proposed for beneficiary-oriented activities in marine, inland fisheries, and aquaculture and about Rs 7,710 crore for fisheries infrastructure. PMMSY aims to increase an additional 70 lakh tonnes of fish production by 2024-25, increasing fish export income to Rs 1 lakh crore by 2024-25.
