A court in Spain has sentenced a former Salvadoran army colonel to 133 years in prison for the murder of five Spanish Jesuit priests in his homeland in 1989.

Inocente Orlando Montano, 77, was found guilty of "terrorist murder".

The killings happened during El Salvador's civil war, when Catholic priests were often accused by the government of collaborating with left-wing rebels.

Montano - who was extradited from the US - had denied wrongdoing.

Spain's top criminal court found him responsible for eight murders. But it could not convict him for the killings of three Salvadorans - the priests' housekeeper and her teenage daughter, and a sixth Jesuit priest - because his extradition to Spain did not cover these cases.

Montano listened from a wheelchair as he was sentenced to 26 years, eight months and one day in prison for each of the five Spanish priests' deaths, the Associated Press news agency reports.

Outside the court, lawyer Manuel Olle told reporters the victims' relatives were "very satisfied" with the verdict.

"The truth is what this sentence says today and it says it with absolute clarity, that the crimes were planned, plotted and decided from the Salvadoran military high command," he said.

The verdict can be appealed against.

What do we know about the case?

The murders took place during El Salvador's 1979 to 1992 civil war between the military-led government and the left-wing Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front (FMLN).

One of the murdered priests, Ignacio Ellacuria, was rector of the Central American University (UCA) in the capital San Salvador and a leading figure in the liberation theology movement, which reached out to the poor of Latin America.

The priests and the two women were dragged from their beds early on 16 November, 1989, and murdered on the university campus.

Prosecutors said Montano, a former deputy defence minister, was part of a far-right group in the military responsible for atrocities and opposed to any peace deal with the FMLN.

They said Montano gave "the direct order to assassinate the Jesuits".

A man suspected of shooting the priests, ex-Lt René Yusshy Mendoza, was a witness for the prosecution.

How did he end up in Spain?

Montano had moved to the US in 2002 and was in jail there for immigration fraud and perjury when the Spanish extradition request was made.

He was extradited from the US in November 2017, having been charged, along with other Salvadoran officers, by a Spanish judge in 2011.

El Salvador refused to hand over to Spain other officers accused over the 1989 murder plot.

Once considered the pride of Himachal Pradesh, Kangra tea has suffered a hard blow from the COVID-19 pandemic and its aftermath. The lockdown, which was followed by a subsequent crash at the Kolkata wholesale market, has left nearly 900 tea planters from Kangra and Mandi – the two tea growing districts, totally devastated.

“ The lockdown hit the tea industry of Kangra not just in the terms of labour shortage at the crucial time of first flush, which begins in April,” said Ashish Butail , a local MLA who belong to a family of tea growers. “Thus, a premium quality of tea went un-plucked. And by the time labour returned, though in very small numbers, transportation became an issue.”

Already facing a crisis due to the high cost of inputs, shrinking area under tea cultivation and tough market competition, Kangra tea sold both as ‘green tea’ and ‘black tea’, is fast turning unviable .There was a time when the Kangra tea used to have a big demand in Europe, Central Asia and Australia, and even Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Despite the efforts of the state government to incentivise the tea growers and revive the glory of Kangra tea, several tea planters went out of business. The number of tea growers has come down sharply from 5,000 to about 1100 since 2010. The area under tea cultivation has also declined from 4000 hectares in the early 80s to 2300 hectares today.

K G Butail, a tea veteran whose family has been into cultivation and marketing of Kangra tea for five generations, expressed both hope and despair as he waxed eloquent about Kangra tea. “The global pandemic and lockdown was the worst thing to happen to the declining tea business, which my forefathers inherited from the Britishers. I am still making profits, despite family division of land, but the future doesn't look so bright,” he told Outlook.

The tea gardens were brimming with first flush -which has the most flavour, quality and value-- when the first lockdown was imposed in March. As the labourers left for their homes, the crop could not be harvested.

“There was a time when only two sectors used to bring money to Himachal Pradesh .One was Kangra tea, and the second were Himachalis working outside the state, sending money back home,” said Butail, a former member of the Tea Board of India. “Even the apple revolution and tourism acted only as add-ons to the primary tea sector, which the Britishers developed in Kangra, finding the climate and lands most suitable to tea cultivation,” he said.

Tea was first grown in the Kangra region in the mid-19th century. In 1848, a Chinese variety of Camellia sinensis was planted in Palampur and Dharamshala. By the 1880s, Kangra tea became popular internationally. The tea received gold and silver medals at international conventions held in London in 1886 and Amsterdam in 1895.

The 1905 Kangra earthquake, which claimed thousands of lives, left a trail of destruction among the gardens and forced the British to sell the plantations. But that did not mark the end of Kangra tea, which soon regained its lost glory.

The role of the Palampur-based Institute of Himalayan Bio -resource Technology (IHBT), a Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) centre, came as a much-needed shot in the arm for the industry. Its first Coordinating Director, Dr N K Jain, who was a specialist on tea, managed to revive several abandoned tea gardens and introduced new technologies and innovations, helping Kangra tea to step back from the brink of extinction.

“It was the result of his efforts that Kangra tea witnessed significant improvements in productivity ,quality and production. Dr Jain got demonstration plots set-up in tea gardens for tea cultivators. He also got a lot of value additions done inducing tea wines and a lot of flavours, which helped increase the market demand of Kangra tea,”says Sishu Patial, a journalist turned farm-entrepreneur.

K G Butail admits that had IHBT not been established at Palampur, Kangra tea could have become a history by now. The production at one stage was almost 19 lakh kg, but current product is a mere eight lakh kg and 60 per cent of the tea gardens have either become defunct or are on the verge of being abandoned. But now that there is a ban on sale of the tea garden lands, the owners have no option but to carry on with tea cultivation.

“Hopes are not lost,” said Butail, pointing out that despite all challenges which Kangra tea faced, his family still made profits from the business that his ancestors had chosen and earned glory in it.

“The loss caused by the pandemic and lock down should act as catalyst to survive,” concurs G S Bali, a former tourism minister who had mooted the idea of tea –tourism to popularise Kangra tea in the world.

Fortnite creator Epic Games said on Thursday Apple has given its users an "indefinite extension" to log into the game using an Apple sign-in system.

Apple and Epic Games have been in a legal tussle since August, when the maker of the popular video game launched its own in-app payment system, which was in violation of the iPhone maker's app store guidelines.

Epic had said on Wednesday that gamers would not be able to log into the game using their Apple sign-in credentials from Friday.

The company, however, warned gamers should prepare their accounts if the Apple sign-in option was removed. The latest update on Apple sign-in access was announced in a tweet and support page.

The South African national government has suspended Cricket South Africa (CSA) on Thursday and has taken control of the sport in the nation, according to a Cricbuzz report.

The move comes as the latest in a series of big blows to the beleagured organisation, who had seen prominent members have to step aside due to corruption charges.

Letters from the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) to CSA says "the CSA board and those senior executives who serve ex-officio on the board (the company secretary, the acting CEO, the CFO and the COO) are directed to step aside from the administration of CSA on full pay" pending the outcome of a month-long investigation by a task team.

SASCOC said that "many instances of maladministration and malpractice that have occurred since at least December 2019. This has manifestly caused great concern and consternation amongst your own members, former and current members of the national team of the Proteas, stakeholders, sponsors, and members of the cricket-loving public.

"There can be no doubt that this has caused cricket to lose the trust and confidence of members of the public, stakeholders, sponsors and the players represented by SACA (the South African Cricketers' Association). All this has brought cricket into disrepute."

SASCOC looks after the relationship between the state and sport federations and therefore has the legal power to put CSA under administration. Their decision, which was taken during a meeting on Tuesday, was passed by a unanimous vote.

Perhaps the biggest fall-out from this will be that South Africa could well be prevented from playing the game at the international level. ICC rules prevent direct government interference in the running of any nation's cricket board.

Kangana's tweet in the wake of a news piece that talks of Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor reacting to the news of Kangana's office demolition by the BMC by calling it an "eye for an eye".

On Thursday morning, actress Dia Mirza tweeted: "Condemn the demolition of Kangana's office. Condemn the harassment and abuse against Rhea. This is not about taking sides. This is about calling out what is unjust. Remember this could happen to you."

LONDON/TOKYO: Britain secured its first big post-Brexit trade deal on Friday, an agreement with Japan which it hailed as “historic” as it struggles to agree on trade with its closest trading partners in the European Union.

Since formally leaving the EU in January, Britain has focused on negotiating new trade deals with countries around the world although experts say they are unlikely to replace exports lost to the EU if a deal cannot be reached with Brussels.

“This is a historic moment for the UK and Japan as our first major post-Brexit trade deal,” British trade minister Liz Truss said.

“The agreement we have negotiated – in record time and in challenging circumstances – goes far beyond the existing EU deal, as it secures new wins for British businesses in our great manufacturing, food and drink, and tech industries.”

The deal had been widely seen as one the easiest within reach for London, based largely on the EU-Japan agreement which covers Britain until the end of December, when a Brexit transition period ends.

Other negotiations, especially with the United States, have progressed more slowly.

Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said the talks had been difficult “but we managed to reach an agreement in principle with extraordinary speed, in just three months”.

He said Japan was aiming for the deal – which would help Japanese manufacturers of train equipment and car components – to come into force on Jan. 1.

Japan has used Britain as a pro-business gateway into the rest of the EU but some Japanese politicians have expressed concerns that a so-called no-deal Brexit might affect this.

Britain said the deal meant 99% of its exports to Japan would be tariff-free, and that it could increase trade by 15.2 billion pounds ($19.4 billion) in the long run, compared with 2018.

“IMPORTANT STEP”

Total trade between Britain and Japan was worth around 29.5 billion pounds in 2018, eclipsed by nearly 700 billion pounds of exports and imports between Britain and the EU.

Britain said digital and data provisions in the agreement would help British fintech firms operating in Japan.

Financial services firms, coat-makers and food producers would benefit from the agreement, and it represented an “important step” towards Britain joining the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) in the Asia-Pacific region, it said.

Big Japanese investors in Britain such as auto makers Nissan and Hitachi would benefit from reduced tariffs on parts, it added.

The deal removes Britain’s tariffs on Japanese cars in stages to zero in 2026, which is the same as in the Japan-EU trade agreement. The issue of automobiles was one of Japan’s main interests.

British business groups welcomed the deal, but underlined the need for a trade deal with the EU.

“We hope the spirit of both ambition and compromise will help land further continuity deals such as with Turkey and Canada, as well as an agreement with the EU, which is of utmost importance to … members,” said Allie Renison, Head of Europe and Trade Policy at the Institute of Directors.

The EU has demanded that Britain scrap a plan to break the divorce treaty signed by both sides in January, but British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s government has refused. The EU says this could sink four years of Brexit talks.

Japan wanted to reach broad consensus with Britain on trade this week before a change in government in Tokyo, which could have caused the negotiations to drift.

NEW DELHI: Urging the government to listen to the youth, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Friday said students giving Staff Selection Commission (SSC) exams have made many good suggestions such as completing the process in a time-bound manner.

"Students giving SSC have given many good suggestions including completion of the examination process + all stages + final result in a fixed period based on a calendar," Priyanka Gandhi said in a tweet in Hindi.
"We support the youth who are speaking out in creative ways such as 'Rashtriya Berozgar Divas'," she said.

The government should listen to the youth, the Congress leader added.

In another tweet earlier, Priyanka Gandhi also cited news reports to allege that there had been a "scam" in purchase of personal protection equipment kits in Uttar Pradesh.

She alleged that there was a cycle of "scam, pretention of crackdown and then suppressing of the scam" in Uttar Pradesh.

LUBBOCK, Texas: Texas Tech coach Matt Wells admittedly has all of the normal first-week concerns he has every season going into an opening game.

There is also that new variable that no coach can control, something the Red Raiders have already experienced while getting ready for the season that starts Saturday night at home against FCS team Houston Baptist.

Coronavirus and the testing will be anxiety that coaches have the entire year, not just week one, because there are so many variables, Wells said. You could have major personnel challenges, and hurdles to overcome. Or you could have minimal (impact), in terms of either the numbers or maybe, somebody is positive that is not ready to play yet and wasnt in the major part of the game plan.

An outbreak during camp forced Wells to scrap a planned scrimmage three weeks ago after 21 players tested positive for COVID-19, along with an unspecified number of additional players who had to be isolated after contact tracing. There were at least nine active case at the start of this week.

Big 12 teams No. 15 Oklahoma State, Baylor and TCU had to postpone their scheduled openers, but the Red Raiders are set to open for what is expected to be the return of quarterback Alan Bowman after two injury-shortened seasons.

Houston Baptist (0-1), already one-third of the way through its fall schedule, has three assistant coaches with Texas Tech ties that certainly have influenced the Huskies. Bailey Zappe, their 6-foot-2 senior quarterback, completed 39 of 62 passes for 480 yards and three touchdowns in HBU’s season-opening 57-31 loss at North Texas.

A major challenge to our defense right out the gate,” Wells said.

Bailey is an incredibly special guy, said Vic Shealy, the only coach HBU has had. Much of what we do is really geared towards him making the adjustments schematically at the line of scrimmage. … It’s his offense so to speak, and he’s got a lot of liberty.

Zappe, overlooked by bigger schools when in high school in Victoria, Texas, relishes opportunities against upper-division schools, and the first game ever against a Power Five opponent for the Huskies, who are in only their eighth season. Zappe threw for 3,811 yards and 35 touchdowns last season, and led FCS quarterbacks with 30 completions a game.

It’s a big-time opportunity for all of us, Zappe said. Guys that were under-recruited like me, to kind of be able to go out there and show everybody what were able to.”

BOWMAN’S BACK

Bowman started seven games as a true freshman in 2018, when he twice dealt with a partially collapsed lung. He played in only first three games last year in Wells’ debut, but was the nations leading passer with 1,020 yards, six TDs and 33.7 completions a game when he broke his collarbone. Bowman opted not to return at the end of last season, and is classified as a sophomore after preserving that year of eligibility.

GOING HOME

HBU offensive coordinator Zach Kittley is the son of Texas Techs long-time championship track and field coach, and running backs coach Tyler Schovanec is the son of the Big 12 school’s president. Huskies offensive line coach Jared Kastner was a three-year starting center for the Red Raiders from 2013-15. Like Kittley and Schovanec, Kastner also worked there for former Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury.

Kittley anticipates his dad wearing a Tech shirt with an HBU cap, but anticipates his mom decked out fully in blue. “That might make a couple of Red Raiders angry … bloods thicker than water, he said.

ADDING TRANSFERS

Texas Tech had six graduate transfers last season, and six more this season. Former Arizona linebacker Colin Schooler is starting for Tech less than a month after transferring when the Pac-12 put off its fall schedule. He had 318 tackles the past three seasons at Arizona, with 46 tackles for loss that are the most among active FBS players.

ALTERED SCHEDULES

Texas Tech is scheduled to play 10 games under the Big 12’s modified plus-one schedule, with HBU its only non-conference game. After the Southland Conference opted not to play this fall and is looking into a spring schedule, the Huskies have only three games set. They are supposed to play Sept. 26 at Louisiana Tech, which had a big virus outbreak and had to postpone its scheduled Saturay opener at Big 12 team Baylor.

Barcelona have their eyes set on Memphis Depay and have agreed personal terms as well, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano. Romano also reports that Inter Milan are confident that they will be able to sign Arturo Vidal from Barcelona.

In the Indian football transfer window, ATK Mohun Bagan, FC Goa and Odisha FC have been the most active ones while Jamshedpur FC, Chennaiyin FC and Hyderabad FC have had coach changes lately as well. While FC Goa appointed Juan Ferrando as their coach early on and hit the market, Chennaiyin and Hyderabad FC have only just found their coaches. Hyderabad, who had Albert Roca as their coach, had to be changed after the Spaniard got an offer from FC Barcelona and moved on. In the European football market, Chelsea have been on a spending spree buying extremely talented youngsters to make up a formidable squad.

In Europe, the biggest of the latest transfer deals have been the signing of Kai Havertz by Chelsea from Bayer Leverkusen for 71m pounds and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Manchester United getting the signature of Donny van de Beek from Ajax Amsterdam. Among the women, Pernille Harder became the most expensive female footballer in the world when she signed with Chelsea.
