A hand grenade was discovered in a garden wall in Amlwch earlier today.

Police erected a 200m cordon around the area in Bethesda Street upon arriving on the scene.

A bomb squad from Manchester has now recovered the old WWII hand grenade which was deemed inactive.

Firefighters were also in attendance.

Hand grenade 'rolled onto floor' when Anglesey resident started taking garden wall down

A bomb disposal squad rushed to North Wales today after a Second World War hand grenade was found embedded in a garden wall.

Homes within 200 metres of the scene on Bethesda Street, Amlwchhad to be evacuated after a resident made the shocking discovery.

North Wales Live understands that the grenade was embedded in a dilapidated garden wall bordering two properties on the Anglesey street.

Statement from police

The Force Incident Manager said: “A world war two munition was discovered in Amlwch earlier today. It has been safely recovered by EOD and the area is safe for members of the public to return to their day to day business.”

Emergency services no longer at the scene

Police and bomb squad have now left the scene, with residents now able to return to their homes.

Around 20 houses evacuated

Around 20 houses are thought to have been evacuated as a result of the bomb scare.

Grenade found within an old wall

Llinos Williams who lives in 42 Bethesda Street says that the grenade was found in an old wall between her house and her neighbour’s.

The grenade was found by her neighbour when he was dismantling the wall.

Police at the scene

Police have been at the scene since around 2pm, according to a resident.

The grenade, believed to date back to WWII, was found in a wall between houses 42 and 44 on Bethesda Street, Amlwch.
