Footage of a man being held down by Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) officers in Springs circulated on social media this week. In the video one of the officers points a rifle at the man being apprehended.
Onlookers can be heard asking the officer if he would shoot the man "at close range", at which point he said he would. It is alleged that the suspect had tried to evade arrest and assaulted one of the officers.
A police spokesperson confirmed that EMPD arrested two suspects on Wednesday, and handed them over to SAPS.
"The pair is expected to appear today [Thursday] before the Springs Magistrate Court on charges of: resisting arrest, intimidation and crimen injuria," said Brigadier Mathapelo Peters.
EMPD spokesperson Kobeli Mokheseng said they handed the case over to SAPS.
The EMPD internal affairs unit is also investigating the incident.
Speculations have been made on social media around the events leading up to the incident, but nothing official has been disclosed by the EMPD or SAPS.
