Online workshop organized by School of Management Studies

(Getty Images) PATIALA: To promote the understanding of different digital online channels, the School of Management Studies (SMS), Punjabi University, Patiala organized the seven days National Online Workshop on ‘Effective Online Teaching and Blended Learning in Emerging Scenario’ from 5th to 11th September this year which successfully came to its conclusion today.
The seven days comprehensive program divided into 26 technical sessions was attended by 79 university and college teachers, gathered online from 8 Indian states and one international participant from Ethiopia. The resource persons both from industry and academia provided knowledge about key concepts, practices and the innovative tools and techniques of effective online teaching and blended learning.
In the inaugural session of the workshop on 5th September, Prof. Gurcharan Singh, Professor and Head, also Workshop Chairman said in commemoration of its Golden Jubilee Year, without bringing any financial burden on the department or on the university, the department was able to successfully organize 18 academic and research-based mega-events. Even during the tough times of Covid-19 pandemic, the department came up with this timely academic endeavour which again was equally well taken up by the teaching community.
Prof. Pushpinder Singh Gill, Professor and Dean (External Centres) while unfolding the theme of the workshop said that today the teachers have no choice but to embrace the online teaching and learning tools but this digital platform has posed many challenges before the educators. The teachers need to learn this technology very fast in order to avoid obsolescence.
During the course of 26 technical sessions, various experts including Prof. B. S. Benni, Dean and Director, Social Sciences Faculty, Vijayanagara Sri Krishnadevaraya University, Karnataka and others discussed in detail more than 70 online teaching and blended learning apps and provided the hands-on practice for major teaching platforms and aids such as LMS (Learning Management Systems), Moodle, Flipped classrooms, Google Classrooms, Google Forms, Google Meet, MOOCs, Zoom, Flipgrid, Wakelet, Latex and many more. The use of creation of interactive videos and audios in the presentations, picture editing tools, online assignments and quizzes, tests, student evaluation and attendance were discussed thoroughly by the experts. At the same time, online teaching prerequisites, ethics and etiquettes required on the part of the teachers were also discussed and deliberated.

Ghuman, Vice-Chancellor, Punjabi University in his Inaugural Speech applauded the efforts of the department and congratulated the head of department for conducting this 7 days workshop which has practical usability for the teachers as many find it very difficult to use and teach through online platforms.
The authorities said that the Covid-19 has resulted in a complete shutdown of schools and colleges all across the world. Globally, over 1.5 billion students are out of the classroom. As a result, the education sector has changed dramatically, with the immediate rise of online teaching and blended learning, whereby the teaching-learning process is undertaken through various online platforms.
The Chief Guest Prof. A.K. Bakhshi Vice-Chancellor, PDM University Bahadurgarh, Haryana in the Valedictory Session said that Indian education sector has altogether changed due to the digital transformation taking place very rapidly and only those teachers would be effective who would be able to adapt to these changes.
