The Mi Notebook 14 product line is Xiaomi’s first laptop series in the Indian market. Unlike its smartphone and smart TV offerings, these laptops are not budget-friendly. Ranging from INR 41,999 to INR 59,999, these laptops provide complete value for money compared to competitors of the same price range.
The very first thing I noticed about the Mi 14 Notebook Horizon Edition was its light weight. Weighing at just 1.35kg, the notebook is super light to carry around, compact, and extremely thin. Speaking about the look and feel, the laptop chassis is completely made of aluminum that gives it a minimalistic look with no logo or design on the lid whatsoever. This, to me, is a very smart move by Xiaomi. Also, you can lift the lid with one hand very easily.
We had a chance to test the topmost variant of the Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition which had the 10th generation Intel Core i7 CPU, 8GB of RAM, 512GB NVMe SSD, and a Full HD display. Throughout the days when I used it as my primary laptop, it performed incredibly well while dealing with my normal workday which incorporated web browsing, content writing, editing pictures, video conferencing on Zoom, using Whatsapp web, and viewing Youtube. Rest assured, you wouldn’t have any complaints while running light to medium errands. One good thing that I noticed is that it does not overheat; at least I didn’t feel it at times when the notebook was on my lap. The trackpad however did cause little difficulty as it was quite sensitive. The Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition is not meant for serious gamers but with the Nvidia GeForce MX350, you can manage light gaming.
Coming to the display, the laptop sports a 14-inch display with nearly no bezels. On the other hand, to give a bezel-less screen to the Mi Note 14 Horizon edition, Xiaomi had to compromise on the webcam. Yes, it doesn’t have an inbuilt webcam, though Xiaomi has included an external webcam in the box which can be handy for your zoom meetings. Personally, the idea of attaching an external webcam every time is a little tedious and limits the functionality of the laptop. The screen is non-reflective which made work easier in overhead lighting and bright surroundings and the full HD display is just fine if your usage is mostly work-related and for casual entertainment.
Adjusting to the Mi Notebook 14 Horizon Edition’s keyboard will take you some time but you do get used to it after a few hours of use. I felt that it is a bit cramped up and Xiaomi could have integrated a better keyboard given the 60k price tag it comes with. The lack of backlit keys makes the keyboard even more difficult to work when dark. Overall, these downsides of the keyboard can be a complete dealbreaker for some.
Summing up, the Mi Notebook 14 Horizon edition is not meant for heavy professional usage like designing or coding but if you’re someone who uses a laptop for regular work activities then you can consider it.
