The coronavirus cases in India is surging unabated, triggering concerns that the world's second-most populous nation may soon surpass the total tally of the U.S.—the worst-hit by the deadly pathogen.

India added over 96,000 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total tally to over 45 lakh in the world’s second-most infected nation, according to the Health Ministry’s update as of 8 a.m. on Sept. 11. That's only behind U.S.’ 63 lakh cases.

Fresh cases India reported on Friday is the highest recorded by any county in a single day.

Key figures:

  • Total number of confirmed coronavirus cases: 45,62,414
  • Active cases: 9,43,480
  • Cured/discharged/migrated: 35,42,663
  • Deaths: 76,271
  • Number of fresh cases in last 24 hours: 96,551
  • One-day recoveries: 70,880
  • One-day deaths: 1,209

Active cases—that have crossed the 9 lakh mark—are still less than 21% of the total Covid-19 pie in India, while fatalities have dropped below 1.7%.

Global Update

Drugmakers seeking an emergency authorization for a Covid-19 vaccine will have to meet a higher standard than normal to win clearance, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said. AstraZeneca Plc said its vaccine could still be ready by year-end.

Global cases topped 28 million as Western Europe surpassed the U.S. for new infections, re-emerging as a global hotspot. Deaths exceeded 907,000, as of Friday morning.
