No effective drug has yet come to the market to treat patients suffering from coronavirus, but plasma therapy was said to be very effective in its treatment. The Delhi government was the first to build a plasma bank and made several claims. Many states later saw this therapy as effective and also implemented it. But new research by ICMR has revealed that plasma transfusion to corona patients also has a no different effect. Plasma therapy also does not help in saving their lives. This result of the research is a big setback for those who believed it was great hope in the rescue of Corona. This new result may also decrease plasma delivery spree.
Advice not to run after plasma therapy
A member of the research team told Amar Ujala that till now plasma has been used to treat infectious diseases. But its accuracy has never been unquestioned. Even in the case of the corona, this exact treatment method has not been proved. During the research, the team has found that even in corona patients who were given plasma, the death rate was found to be almost at the same level as those who were not given plasma.
The highest opinion about plasma was that the corona does not take serious form after giving plasma to the patient. But this research has also proved to be wrong. Patients with corona-positive plasma transfusion were also reported to have a more or less similar decline in their disease status as seen in other patients. Looking at the results of the research, experts have advised not to follow plasma therapy to treat corona sufferers.
How did research happen
ICMR selected 39 government and private hospitals to test how effective plasma therapy is in treating corona sufferers. Plasma taken from patients aged 15 to 65 who were healthy with corona was given 200 ml of plasma to all 464 patients involved in the research. All patients involved in the research were of moderate level of suffering. Breathing and blood oxygen levels were normal.
After studying the results of this research conducted between April 22 and July 14, the research team found that both patients who were given plasma, and those who were not given plasma, had a higher level of disease and mortality. Was almost the same. The results of the research have also been registered with the Clinical Trial Registry of India (CTRI).
What is the expert say
Dr. Tulika Chandra, head of the Blood Transfusion Department at KGMU, told Amar Ujala that he has been offered plasma to over 90 Corona victims so far. Of these, 70 percent of the patients have benefited from this and have gone healthy to their homes, while the remaining 30 percent of the patients have not benefited from it.
He stated that it is already known that plasma is effective only for moderate level serious patients. In these circumstances, it should be adopted for patients with moderate levels until the vaccine is introduced for the corona. However, it is true that it does not prove effective for more severe patients.
