Police are investigating the circumstances of the death of an elderly man in Toorak on Wednesday night.

Emergency services were called to a home in Orrong Road about 8pm after receiving a report the man was injured.

The 72-year-old was taken to hospital but died a short time later.

Local detectives and homicide investigators attended the property on Wednesday night and established a crime scene.

Police say they will await the results of a post-mortem to assist in determining the circumstances of the death.

A 71-year-old woman is helping police with their investigation.
