New Delhi: With 9,19,018 new Covid-19 cases, India has recorded a total of 44,65,863 infections so far. According to data by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, 75,062 people have died and 34,71,783 have recovered from Covid-19 in total.
In ThePrint’s daily States Tracker, we take a look at the data on testing and the rate at which the infection is spreading throughout India.
For this analysis, we use three parameters:
Rt value, known as reproduction number, is indicative of the number of new cases that are expected to emerge from a single case. An R value of less than 1 suggests that the rate of infection is slow since an infected patient will only infect less than one person.
Positivity rate is the percentage of people who are found to be infected by the virus from those who are being tested. This parameter indicates how widespread the disease is.
Tests per million give insight into the amount of testing being conducted in relation to the population of the area.

Rt value
India’s Rt value increased to 1.08 Thursday from 1.07 Wednesday.
Both Bihar and Puducherry recorded the lowest Rt value in India at 0.94. This was followed by Jharkhand at 0.95, Ladakh at 0.95, Manipur at 0.96, Telangana at 0.96, Assam at 0.97, Tamil Nadu at 0.97, Andhra Pradesh at 0.99, Goa at 0.99 and Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu at 1.00.
Mizoram continued to record the highest Rt value in India at 2.21. This was followed by Jammu and Kashmir at 1.42, Himachal Pradesh at 1.28, Delhi at 1.28, Chhattisgarh at 1.25 and Kerala at 1.23.
Positivity rate
India’s positivity rate recorded an increase of 8.24 per cent Thursday from 8.10 per cent Wednesday.
Bihar continued to record the lowest positivity rate in India at 1.17 per cent. This was followed by Gujarat at 1.79 per cent, Manipur at 3.12 per cent, Jharkhand at 4.16 per cent and Telangana at 4.19 per cent.
Goa replaced Chandigarh to record the highest positivity rate in India at 27.66 per cent. This was followed by Puducherry at 24.58 per cent, Maharashtra at 23.56 per cent and Chandigarh at 20.58 per cent.
Maharashtra recorded an increase in positivity rate to 23.56 per cent Thursday from 23.35 per cent Wednesday.
Tests per million
India’s average tests per million remained consistent at 37,776 as of Thursday.
Madhya Pradesh recorded the lowest number of tests per million at 18,603. This was followed by West Bengal at 22,949, Chhattisgarh at 24,447.
Goa continued to record the highest number of tests per million in India at 1,37,106. This was followed by Ladakh at 1,27,585, Arunachal Pradesh at 1,23,942 and Delhi at 1,01,746.
