Disgruntled Kaizer Chiefs fans have taken to Twitter to demand that Gavin Hunt be appointed as the new head coach after the sacking of German tactician Ernst Middendorp on Wednesday.

The 61-year-old was confirmed to have departed the club by mutual consent after narrowly missing out on the Absa Premiership title on the final day of the season.

The Soweto giants revealed that "style of play, performances and results" were considered before making their decision to move in a new direction.

"We truly believed and hoped that our 50th anniversary year would be better, and it indeed looked promising. The decision taken is part of a strategy to have the team win trophies again and to make our supporters happy because they deserve better," chairperson Kaizer Motaung said.

Fans, who witnessed Amakhosi narrowly missing out on the league title - after leading the standings for more than a calendar year - are now demanding the club hire Gavin Hunt.

The former Bidvest Wits mentor is now a free agent after the recent sale of the club's PSL status. Bafana Bafana legend Benni McCarthy has also been linked to the vacant post and is available after leaving Cape Town City.

Chiefs confirmed that they will be announcing their new head coach appointment before the squad returns for pre-season training at the end of September.
