US sanctions on Huawei hit chip supply and growth

74% of registered candidates appeared for JEE-Mains in September
- According to statistics available with the Ministry of Education, out of 8.58 lakh applicants, 6.35 lakh appeared for the engineering test from September 1 to 6. The exam was conducted after being deferred twice in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Last year, the attendance in the January and April edition of the exam was 94.11 per cent and 94.15 per cent respectively.
- The Supreme Court had earlier dismissed a plea seeking postponement of the two exams amid a spurt in the number of COVID-19 cases, saying a "precious year" of students cannot be wasted and life has to go on.
Plea in Delhi HC for timely salary payment to nurses

Newcastle says Saudi takeover inappropriately rejected
- Newcastle has accused the Premier League's leadership of acting inappropriately in rejecting a takeover bid involving a Saudi Arabian sovereign wealth fund and said it would be considering “all relevant options available."
- The English club's statement comes more than a month after Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund announced it was withdrawing and criticized the “unforeseeably prolonged process.”
Centre urges states to retest RAT negatives
- The Union Health Ministry has urged all States and Union Territories (UTs) to mandatorily retest all symptomatic negative cases of Rapid Antigen Tests (RAT) through gold-standard RT-PCR tests to diagnose COVID-19.
- "This is necessary to ensure that such symptomatic negative cases do not remain untested and do not spread the disease among their contacts. This will also ensure early detection and isolation/hospitalization of such false negatives. It has also been reiterated in the joint letter that while the RAT is being used to increase access and availability of testing in the field, RT-PCR remains the gold standard of COVID tests," said an official. The Centre has also urged the States/UTs to urgently establish a monitoring mechanism in every district (a designated officer or a team) and at the State level to follow up such cases.

69% of total deaths concentrated in four states, one UT
- More than 74 per cent of the total active cases of COVID-19 are in nine most affected states, while 69 per cent of the total deaths reported so far are concentrated in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Delhi and Andhra Pradesh, the Centre said on Thursday.
- The ministry said that 60 per cent of the cumulative cases of COVID-19 have been reported from only five states -- Maharashtra (9,67,349), Andhra Pradesh (5,27,512), Tamil Nadu (4,80,524), Karnataka (4,21,730), and Uttar Pradesh (2,85,041) .
- There are 9,19,018 active cases of COVID-19 in the country which comprises 20.58 per cent of the total caseload, according to the ministry's data updated at 8 am.
Supreme Court extends loan repayment moratorium till September 28
- The previous deadline of the scheme, which was implemented to help borrowers tide over the Covid-19 crisis, had ended on August 31. Borrowers had been permitted to defer loan repayments for a period of six months.

Pakistan court declares Nawaz Sharif proclaimed offender in corruption case
- : A Pakistan accountability court has indicted former President Asif Ali Zardari and former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani in connection with the Toshakhana (gift depository) case and declared former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif a proclaimed offender in the matter.
- Accountability court Judge Asghar Ali in Islamabad also framed charges against Omni Group chairman Anwar Majeed and his son, Abdul Ghani Majeed in the case, The Express Tribune reported.
- In the case, Sharif and Zardari have been accused by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) of illegally retaining expensive vehicles gifted to them by various foreign countries and dignitaries instead of depositing them in the Toshakhana.

Two held with weapons near Kulgam linked to Pakistan
- Preliminary investigations into the arrest of two suspected terrorists, who were apprehended with weapons near Jawahar Tunnel, Kulgam on September 8 have revealed that they were in contact with an active terrorist in Pakistan, the Chinar Corps-Indian Army said.
- In a joint operation of the Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police, two men were apprehended after the discovery of weapons during a search of the truck bases on Jammu and Kashmir Police inputs near Kulgam. The vehicle was travelling from Akhnoor of Jammu district.

Rajnath holds brief conversation with French defence minister
