Representative imageCHENNAI: A couple, their daughter and a friend were arrested for duping a man of 52 lakh, promising to get his son an admission in Harvard University, Boston.
Police said the accused - Sembaiya Viswanathan, 51, wife Dharshini, 47, daughter Akshaya Ashwanti, 21, of Korattur and T Rajasekaran, 42, of Vanagaram, had moved to the city from Sri Lanka 15 years ago.
The victim, Sunil Kumar Handa, 52, of Nungambakkam, got in touch with the family through their mutual friend Rajasekaran in 2018. The couple told him that their daughter Akshaya was pursuing journalism in Harvard and could get his son a seat to pursue computer science engineering. Sunil paid 52.48 lakh to them for it and was given receipts, found to be forged later.
He lodged a complaint at the Central Crime Branch, prompting action. The four were remanded in judicial custody.
