DUMKA: Police on Wednesday said they have arrested the second accused in the gang-rape case of a 36-year-old sadhvi (Hindu nun). The accused, Ashish Rana, was nabbed by police from Khataon village on Wednesday morning.
Another accused, Deepak Rana, was held hours after the crime on Tuesday.
The nun was living in an ashram in Pathwara village under Muffassil police station since February.
Godda SP Y S Ramesh said: “Deepak and Ashish confessed to their crime and have named two of their accomplices. Raids are underway to nab the other two.” All the four accused are residents of Pathwara village.
In her statement, the complainant said that she was raped at gunpoint in a room of the ashram in the early hours of Tuesday, while the other residents of the ashram were held hostage by the accused in separate rooms. Armed with firearms, the four assailants had entered the ashram’s premises by scaling the boundary walls.
The incident has triggered sharp reactions from the opposition. BJP’s Godda MLA Amit Mandal said, “Deepak has criminal cases against him and enjoys the patronage of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha.” Mandal also criticised the state government and alleged that it has failed to maintain law and order.
