Despite a sharp surge in COVID-19 cases in the national capital over the last fortnight, the Delhi government has ruled out possibility of another lockdown, with Health Minister Satyendar Jain asserting that the economy "cannot be kept shut for eternity".

Metro Rail services commence on 'Green Line' also
Bengaluru: As part of gradually restoring Metro rail operations,the Bangalore Metro Rail on Wednesday commenced services on another sector--the Green line-- two days after resuming it on another one.
However, the services are yet to attract large number of passengers as most have apparently kept away due to Covid-19 apprehensions,according to officials.
Metro Rail officials said these trains will operate only during peak hours from 8 am to 11 am and 4.30 pm to 7.30 pm.

The coronavirus pandemic has dealt a crippling blow to the Indian travel and tourism industry and the entire value chain linked to the sector is likely to lose around Rs 5 lakh crore or USD 65.57 billion, according to a study by industry chamber CII and hospitality consulting firm Hotelivate.
The organised sector alone is likely to lose USD 25 billion. The figures are quite alarming and the industry needs immediate measures for survival, according to the CII-Hotelivate report.

UK PM plans law banning large gatherings as COVID-19 cases rise
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson is planning tougher new restrictions on social gatherings of more than six people in England starting next Monday, following a significant rise in the coronavirus cases.
A law change to be introduced will ban larger groups of friends and family meeting anywhere socially indoors or outdoors, to be enforced through a 100 pounds fine if people fail to comply and doubling on each offence up to a maximum of 3,200 pounds.
The rule will not apply to schools, workplaces or COVID-secure weddings, funerals and organised team sports, Downing Street said on Wednesday.

Global Covid-19 cases surpass 27.5mn
The overall number of global coronavirus cases has surpassed the 27.5 million mark, while the deaths have increased to over 897,000, according to the Johns Hopkins University.
As of Wednesday morning, the total number of cases stood at 27,570,742 and the fatalities rose to 897,383, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed in its latest update.
The US accounted for the world's highest number of cases and deaths at 6,327,009 and 189,653 respectively, according to the CSSE.
India came in the second place with 4,370,128 infections and 73,890 deaths.

Dr Reddy's launches Remdesivir for COVID-19 treatment in India
Dr Reddys Laboratories Ltd on Wednesday announced the launch of Remdesivir, meant for treatment of COVID-19 patients, under a brand name 'Redyx' in India.
According to a press release from the drug maker, the launch is part of the licensing agreement with Gilead Sciences, Inc. (Gilead) that grants Dr Reddys the right to register, manufacture and sell Remdesivir, a potential treatment for Covid-19, in 127 countries including India.
Remdesivir is approved by Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) for restricted emergency use in India for the treatment of Covid-19 patients hospitalized with severe symptoms.

South Goa district hospital to treat COVID-19 patients
The Goa health department has decided to convert the South Goa District Hospital into a facility for COVID-19 patients, state Health Minister Vishwanjit Rane said.
The hospital located in Margao town will start operating as a COVID-19 treatment facility with 250 beds from Friday, Rane said on Tuesday.
The decision has been taken in the wake of rise in number of COVID-19 cases in the coastal state.
As of now, COVID-19 patients in the state are being treated at the ESI Hospital in Margao (South Goa), the Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) near Panaji (North Goa) and the Sub-District Hospital in Ponda (South Goa).

Covid tally
Five states -- Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu -- account for nearly 70 per cent of deaths due to COVID-19 in the country, Union Health Ministry said on Tuesday.
Maharashtra accounts for 27 per cent of the total active cases, Andhra Pradesh 11 per cent, Karnataka 10.98 per cent, Uttar Pradesh about seven per cent, and Tamil Nadu around six per cent.

Telangana's Covid tally
Telangana continued to witness a surge in coronavirus caseload with 2,479 fresh infections and 10 more deaths, taking the aggregate in the state to1.47 lakh. Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) accounted for the most number of cases with 322, followed by Rangareddy 188, Medchal Malkajgiri 183 and Warangal Urban 124 districts, a government bulletin said on Wednesday, providing data as of 8 PM on September 9. The toll rises to 916 in the state with 10 related fatalities. The cumulative recovered cases stood at 1.15 lakh while 31,644are under treatment.

UN agencies supporting Indian govt-led efforts to deal with coronavirus pandemic: UN spokesperson
As the number of COVID-19 cases in India soars to over 4.2 million, several UN agencies are supporting the government-led health and socioeconomic efforts to help deal with the outbreak.
Spokesman for the UN Secretary-General Stephane Dujarric said at the daily press briefing on Tuesday that the UN team in India is led by Resident Coordinator Renata Dessallien.
It is supporting the “government-led health and socioeconomic consequences of the pandemic”, with over 4.2 million confirmed cases to date.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has assisted with contact tracing of 8 million cases, while the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF) has trained 2.2 million health workers in Infection Prevention and Control, reaching 650 million children and families with life-saving information. The UN team has also supplied personal protective equipment.

British Columbia imposes fresh curbs on nightclubs
British Columbia on Tuesday ordered the closure of all nightclubs and Ontario delayed an easing of remaining restrictions imposed to fight the coronavirus pandemic, as Canada reported a spike in new COVID-19 cases.
The rise comes as schools across the country started to reopen after a nearly five-month forced shutdown to contain the spread of the virus, which has killed 9,153 people, according to latest government data. New cases jumped by 1,606 in the past 24 hours, taking the total to 133,748.
