Facing harassment by in-laws, woman & family seek euthanasia

Noida: Failing to get justice and driven to despair, a family of six people has written to the President seeking his attention to harassment meted out to their daughter at the hands of her in-laws and husband who allegedly demanded dowry from her. The family is now seeking euthanasia, stating that they don’t wish to live.
The family is fighting a legal battle against the husband and in-laws of 27-year-old Kumkum Tiwari, who got married to Vivek Dubey of Delhi’s Madanpur Khadar in January 2019.
Kumkum’s family has alleged her in-laws pressured them to give them Rs 5 lakh more in cash and a Scorpio. In the FIR lodged against the accused, Vivek, and his eight other family members in the women’s police station, the family alleged that Kumkum was beaten up badly and was made to undergo two abortions since she couldn’t give the dowry.
Kumkum’s brother Ram Anuj Tiwari alleged that they were receiving death threats from unknown callers. “The sister-in-law of my sister’s husband Seema Dubey is a local BJP leader. She has tried to lodge an FIR against us when we went to their house to request them to bring my sister back. They do not want to send my sister back even though she has recovered from celiac disease,” he said.
He also showed a statement from the AIIMS, which stated that while Kumkum underwent an evaluation for her illness, she was not found to have celiac disease. “She has no major enteropathic disease,” it stated.
In-laws allege they were misled
Booked under the strict sections of IPC 498 a (harassment for dowry), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 316 (causing death of quick unborn child by act amounting to culpable homicide), 328 (causing hurt by means of poison, etc., with intent to commit an offence) and sections of the Dowry Prohibition Act, the in-laws of the woman alleged that they were misled at the time of the wedding and not informed about the illness of the woman.
“After the marriage, we came to know that she is not keeping well and can’t eat wheat. She would vomit as soon as she ate something made of wheat. We were not informed about her condition at the time of the marriage,” Seema Dubey, Vivek’s sister-in-law and former BJP district secretary for Delhi’s Mayur Vihar told TOI.
DCP (women’s safety) Vrinda Shukla told TOI that the allegations were exaggerated and if the family was facing threats, they could give a complaint to the investigating officer.
