Bishop Stang will play sports this fall as part of the Catholic Central League (Large Division) along with Bishop Feehan, Archbishop Williams, Cardinal Spellman, Austin Prep. St. Mary’s of Lynn, Bishop Fenwick and Arlington Catholic.

“We waited to see the modifications by the MIAA and we talked as a league and we talked as a school and we decided to move forward,” said Bishop Stang athletic director Dennis Golden on Tuesday afternoon.

Golden said Stang will play a shortened schedule that could also include some local teams.

“We’re playing in our league and hoping to play a few local teams as well,” he said, noting that the first day of fall practice is slated for Sept. 18. “We won’t have an excessive number of games and some of the longer trips will be on Saturdays. We’re working it out right now.”

This fall the Spartans will compete in golf, cross country, field hockey, soccer and volleyball while higher risk sports, like football and competitive cheer, must wait until the Fall II season under the MIAA’s guidelines. Golden expects most of Stang’s teams to start having games by early October.

“I think it’s positive,” he said. “Right now we’re dealing with the kids coming back to school and you can see them smiling underneath their masks.

“We wanted to do sports safely and we want to support our students and give them the best opportunities we can give them right now. We’re grateful for the opportunity.”
