Representative imageMUMBAI: A final year BSc IT student recently lost Rs1.4 lakh in an online fraud after he was lured with an SUV worth nearly Rs 13 lakh.
Victim Abhay Mishra (20) had saved the money over two years doing part-time jobs to pay fees for a Master’s course.
Oshiwara police registered the case on September 5, almost three weeks after the fraud occurred on August 13.
The Jogeshwari (West) resident says he got a call from a person who identified himself as Alok Kumar, employed with an Indian e-commerce company. Mishra was informed he had won an SUV, but he could get cash in lieu on payment of a processing fee of Rs1,750. “I realised I had got duped when the caller kept demanding more money,” Mishra, who eventually ended up making 10 money transfers of a total Rs1.4 lakh, told TOI.
An Oshiwara police officer said they had sought details from the bank to know the money trail.
