Gurgaon: The crime branch of Gurgaon police arrested three persons with smack worth Rs 1.6 crore from Sohna. The trio was smuggling the drug from West Bengal and supposed to deliver it in Gurgaon, a police officer said.
The crime unit of Sector 17 received the information regarding the movement of three men in a Maruti Eeco.
“A police team had set up a checkpost and intercepted the vehicle and found around 800 grams of smack hidden inside a bag covered with clothes,” the officer told TOI.
The accused were smuggling the drug from West Bengal and they had covered all the distance by road. “They used to travel through internal roads, mostly during night and at times when there was minimal police presence on the road. They had managed to reach Gurgaon but before they could deliver the packet, the crime team nabbed them from Sohna,” ACP (crime) Preet Pal Sangwan said, adding that the arrested smugglers are part of the drug cartel which was active for the past six years.
The ACP said that they have identified other members of the gang and are trying to nab them.
The arrested accused were identified as Minrul Sheikh, Mozibir Sheikh and Majnu Sheikh, all from West Bengal. A case was registered against the three at Sohna City police station under NDPS Act.
Earlier during the nationwide lockdown Gurgaon police made a major recovery of around 107 kg of marijuana from a shop in Udyog Vihar and arrested three people, including a person from Bangladesh. The banned substance was smuggled from Odisha before the lockdown and was supposed to be supplied in Delhi-NCR.
“We have been carrying out a sustained drive against drug smuggling and a large number of cases are being registered,” said ACP.
