Over 100 cattle cruelly transported through train to Karnataka dairy farm, one dies

Nagpur: In yet another case of animal cruelty, a first-of-its-kind incident of cruel transportation of over 100 cattle through a train has come to the fore in the city.
On Tuesday afternoon, animal activists received a call from railway authorities, alerting them about death of a pregnant cattle during transportation. As per the given information, the animals were being transported from Kurukshetra and were supposed to reach Karnataka on Wednesday.
While the activists initially suspected that the cattle were being taken for slaughtering, it later came to the fore that they were being taken to a dairy farm.
Irked by the cruel method of transportation, animal activist Karishma Galani reported the matter to higher railway authorities. According to her, various sections of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Rules, 1978, were violated. “The rules state that only 10 animals are allowed in one container. However, in this case, 15-20 animals were packed in a container,” she said.
She added that no sunlight or ventilation was available for the animals. “As per norms, the pregnant cow should not have been kept along with other animals. It is due to sheer negligence that the animal died,” said Galani.
The activist demanded a first information report (FIR) against the concerned people. “I did not get any support from the higher authorities of railway. I will now approach the judiciary,” she stated.
