A 49-year-old man sustained a cut to his head when five unknown men entered a property in Sydney's south-west and assaulted him, police say.

Emergency services attended the incident at Carcoola Street in Canley Vale about 7.30pm on Tuesday following reports a man had been assaulted and two shots had been fired towards the house.

A second man chased the group from the property.

The group of men fled the scene in a blue sedan, witnesses said. They have been described only as Pacific Islander/Maori in appearance.
