TENKASI: A woman killed her newborn baby boy and set the body on fire at Sankarankovil in Tenkasi district of Tamil Nadu in the early hours of Wednesday.
Passersby found the baby on fire on the premises of a private theatre around 4am. They put out the flames and alerted the Sankarankovil town police.
The police rushed to the spot and sent the body to the Sankarankovil Government Hospital for postmortem.
Inquiries revealed that the baby was born to S Sankaragomathi, 22, of Sangupuram. She killed the newborn as she was not living with the baby’s biological father.
“She gave birth around 2am. It is not clear how she killed the baby. She set the body on fire using some pieces of clothes on the theatre premises,” superintendent of police (SP) G Suguna Singh said.
The SP said the mother was very weak due to which she had to be hospitalised. He added that further details would be known when inquiries are conducted with the woman.
The police formed special teams to secure the father of the child.
