Aasu, AJYCP likely to announce political party in next 7 days

GUWAHATI: All Assam Students’ Union (Aasu) and Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP) are likely to launch their political outfit in the next seven days.
Speaking to the media here on Tuesday, Aasu president Dipanka Kumar Nath said, “For the sake of the protection of the community and to take regionalism forward in the right direction, Aasu and AJYCP have been reiterating the need of an alternate political force from time to time. It will be given a visible form and within the next one week its seeds will be sown. The matter will make considerable progress during this period.”
Aasu and AJYCP have not yet made public the suggestions given to them by an 18-member panel headed by eminent personalities of Assam on their plans to enter electoral politics. Aasu insiders, however, said the panel has suggested floating the proposed political party, an idea that started gaining ground when the movement against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act in December started last year.
Amid ambiguity over the proposed “grand alliance” of the opposition forces under Congress and All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), jailed Krishak MuktiSangram Samiti (KMSS) leader Akhil Gogoi on Monday appealed to Aasu, AJYCP to contest the 2021 assembly polls with KMSS with one symbol and one flag to keep BJP and Congress-led alliances at bay.
Though Aasu and KMSS have always been divided due to ideological differences, Nath said, “When the alternative political force (party) takes the final shape, its leadership will think over the coalition by holding discussions with political quarters.”
“Aasu members work day and night for the people of Assam. But during elections, we have seen political forces with vested interest take their help to win elections. This time, they won’t be given a chance,” Nath said.
Meanwhile, a 70-member forum headed by KMSS has once again urged Aasu and AJYCP to come to direct talks with them before taking a decision on floating its own political party.
