High risk pregnant woman suffering from Covid-19 gives birth to baby boy in Madurai hospital

MADURAI: A 23-year-old high risk pregnant woman, who was Covid-19 positive and suffering from jaundice, gave birth to a baby boy through C-section in Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) in Madurai.
Both the mother and baby were discharged.
According to a statement released by the hospital on Tuesday, the Covid-19 positive woman from Dindigul suffered from pregnancy-induced hypertension and jaundice. She was admitted to GRH in a critical condition on August 11.
“The woman was admitted to Covid-19 speciality ward of the hospital and an emergency C-section was performed. The woman suffered from multiple high risk illnesses. Doctors from departments of nephrology, gastroenterology, general medicine and obstetrics and gynaecology worked together to ensure the patient’s recovery,” said GRH dean Dr J Sangumani in the statement.
Plasmapheresis procedure was performed on her to treat jaundice. The woman had to be administered 36 fresh frozen plasma (FFP) and packed red blood cells.
Haemodialysis, the process of purifying the blood when kidneys are not working normally, was also performed.
The GRH dean praised the efforts of the doctors from various departments for their prompt and successful treatment.
