The Red Sox continued to pivot toward 2021 with a host of roster moves on Tuesday.

Boston recalled infielder Christian Arroyo and started him at second base to open the doubleheader against the Phillies. Deivy Grullon traveled as the 29th man on the roster and was set to catch the nightcap.

Boston cleared a 40-man roster spot for Arroyo by placing Andrew Benintendi (right rib cage strain) on the 45-day injured list. Benintendi will miss the remainder of the season. Arroyo’s playing time also came at the expense of Jose Peraza, who started the afternoon on the bench at Citizens Bank Park.

"It is an opportunity to see some new guys and to give them a chance," Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke said. "Where we’re at right now, I’m kind of looking forward to it."

Arroyo was a waiver claim from Cleveland who also has previous time in the big leagues with the Giants and Rays. Grullon was a waiver claim from the Phillies and was one of their top 20 prospects as recently as last year. He homered at the alternate site in Pawtucket against former Philadelphia teammate Nick Pivetta on Saturday.

"He’s got a pretty potent bat, especially for that position," Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom said in a pregame interview with NESN. "He has good defensive tools, but he still has some work to do defensively."
