Coimbatore building collapse toll rises to four; CM announces compensation

COIMBATORE: The death toll in a two-storey building collapse at KC Thottam in Coimbatore rose to four on Monday night.
Manikandan,42, who was rescued from the debris on Sunday night and was undergoing treatment in Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital, died on Monday night. In the evening, fire and rescue services personnel retrieved the body of a woman named Kasthuri,65, from the debris after 20 hours of operation.
The other two deceased people are Swetha alias Shalini, 25, and K Gopalsamy, 72.
The building collapsed around 9.10pm on Sunday.
Fire and rescue services personnel rescued Vanaja, 65, her grandson Dhanveer, 5, Manoj, 47, and Manikandan (who died on Monday night). Local people rescued two women, identified as Kavitha, 46, and Sarojini,70, from the debris.
Chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced a compensation of Rs 1 lakh each to the family members of the deceased.
Police said the building could have been weakened by incessant rain in the city over the past few days.
