NEET 2020 to be held on September 13, aspirants anxious ahead of exam

MADURAI: With around 100 fresh Covid-19 cases per day being reported in Madurai district and total cases rising across the country, NEET aspirants here are concerned for their exam on September 13. While the JEE Mains exam has already been conducted between September 1-6 with safety protocols for Covid-19 in place, NEET exam, too, is set to be held the same way.
“Nationwide we are seeing so many students protest against NEET. We almost expected for the exam to be cancelled but now, we are just a few days away from the exam. This has made me and my parents paranoid. But, I can’t miss it either,” said N Saranya, a NEET aspirant.
With public transport and inter-district travel being resumed and movement of people increased, NEET aspirants are worried that no one can even be sure of the source of infection. “Even if by accident, one student tests Covid-19 positive after taking the exam, there will only be chaos. Students and their families will only suffer and be blamed. But what can we do now?” said Gautham Selvakumar, another NEET aspirant.
“Students are already anxious and stressed out. With their safety at risk, it is not ideal for such an exam to be conducted now. For many students, their future is on the line . As trainers, we are trying our best to keep the students motivated and educate them about staying safe at exam centres,” said K Shivaprasad, a trainer for NEET at a coaching centre in Anna Nagar.
For government school students, the pressure is double. “Government was able to hold only online classes for free for NEET aspirants in government schools and we can’t be sure how far it reached students. Though a safety protocol is in place at examination centres, we are worried about our students’ safety. With ‘Unlock 4.0’, many families are not taking Covid-19 as seriously,” said S Selvan, a government school teacher of biology for Class XII and a NEET trainer.
