Assam: Royal Bengal Tiger, wild boar die in rare clash at Kaziranga

Officials said the two animals were so badly injured that they could not move from the spot
JORHAT: A fight between a wild boar and a tiger is supposed to be a one-sided contest. But a different story played out at the Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve recently when the wild boar not only put up a fight, but also inflicted fatal injuries on a Royal Bengal Tiger. Both the animals died in the fierce battle.
The carcasses of the two animals were found at the tiger reserve’s Kohora forest range on Saturday evening, with officials saying this was the first time they had witnessed a Royal Bengal Tiger and a wild boar dying in a fight.
Kaziranga research officer Robin Sarmah said, “This was happened for the first time in the history of Kaziranga that a Royal Bengal Tiger died fighting a wild boar. We have never been witness to such an incident.”
He added, “Forest staffs found both the animals at the spot. The tiger sustained grievous injuries in its belly and the wild boar had multiple injury marks on its body. Both animals succumbed to their injuries and could not move from the spot.”
Park director P Shivakumar confirmed the death of the Royal Bengal Tiger and said, “Carcasses of an adult Royal Bengal Tiger and a wild boar were detected at Kohora forest range.”
Forest staffs said the incident took place near Teteleguri anti-poaching camp in Kohora. The carcasses were found during patrolling.
“We got a foul smell from the Teteliguri highland area and started a search. Later, we found two carcasses of a Royal Bengal Tiger and a wild boar at the spot. Both carcasses have been decomposed and we believe the fight may have happened about 10 days ago.”
Veterinarians in the park conducted autopsies of the animals and sent samples to the state forensic laboratory in Guwahati for testing on Sunday. With this, Kaziranga lost three Royal Bengal Tigers this year.
