Nirmala SitharamananCHENNAI: Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharamanan on Monday said there was no instruction from her ministry to remove regional languages at nationalised banks and thier ATMs.
She tweeted in response to a tweet by DMK MP Tiruchi Siva. Siva had tweeted, “We condemn strongly the removal of regional languages at banks and ATMs.” He urged the minister to immediately restore status quo.
Responding to it, the finance minister said the ministry had not issued such an instruction. “There are no instructions from @finMinIndia to banks and ATMs to removal of regional language.”
The tweet further read, “We encourage use of regional languages. If there is any such instance of ‘removal’ please bring it to my notice, I assure speedy action.” She tweeted the same in Tamil.
The removal or non-available of regional language hit the social media on Monday amidst the rekindled political storm over ‘imposition’ of Hindi and three language policy.
In fact, Twitter user Boopal Sridhar (@boopalsridhar) replied to the MP’s tweet by posting his view that only Hindi and English languages were operational at several banks in Coimbatore and other districts in the state. His tweets read: “ Today, I visited Syndicate Bank ATM (called Canara now). There was no Tamil. Only Hindi and English. Also multiple ATMs throughout Coimbatore dist and other dists in Tamil Nadu are only operational in Hindi +English now.”
A twitter user -- @csramesha -- urged the MPs from the state to raise the issue in the coming parliamentary session.
@UncthVllgeYouth replied to the minister said, “For once, ,I agree with you mam. How can you remove regional languages, when half the ATMs don’t have them. How can you remove something, which wasn’t there in the first place.”
