Ghaziabad: Traffic police have identified 15 areas (black spots) in Ghaziabad that are notorious for fatal accidents.
In three years (2017-2019), these spots have witnessed 195 accidents in which 254 people died and 195 were injured. The major causes for the high accident rate in these areas include faulty roads engineering and speeding, the traffic police said.
According to the data, the maximum number of accidents have taken place at seven junctions — Sewa Nagar (Ghukna Meerut road), Arthala, Rajchaupla, Sikricut, Modi Mandir cut, Duhai, ITS and Dasna — on NH-58 and one — Dasna — on NH-24. As many as 132 accidents took place here and 165 people lost their lives at these spots.
At two black spots on SH-57 (Pavi Sadakpur Gaon cut and Mandola Gaon chauraha), 15 accidents took place and 23 people died while 13 people were injured.
Five blackspots have neem identified at internal roads, where 48 accidents took place in which 66 people died. These include Seem Border, Mohan Nagar, Bhopura Tiraha, Karan gate and Loni Tiraha. According to residents, the roads in Ghaziabad showcase how lack of road engineering and foresight by authorities has led to chaos. They attribute the cause to poor urban planning and the city’s infrastructure inability to cope with rapid expansion.
Over 200 people have been killed each year in the last four years. This year (Jan 1 to August 31), 182 deaths have been reported so far. In 2019, 539 accidents took place in which 219 people lost their lives while 373 were injured.
SP (traffic) Ramanand Kushwaha said, “I have carried out inspections along with PWD and RTO officials. I will send a report to the authorities concerned to start work at the designated spots.”
