Less than half turned out for JEE (Mains) over six days in Bengal

KOLKATA: On Sunday, when the JEE (Mains) exam ended and a stocktaking of the attendees was done at the city's biggest centre for the exam, TCS Gitabitan at Sector V, it was found that 47.3% of candidates appeared for the examination over six days.

The numbers have been proportionately low at the other centres of Bengal. There is yet no explanation as to why the numbers have been so low, but lack of transport to reach venues and fear of Covid among examinees have been cited as one of the probable causes. The overall percentage of examinees having written the exam across Bengal over the past six days stood at only 47.2.

The entrance exam to a number of tech schools in the country is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the responsibility of organising the exams is with TCS iON, a wing of the leading software company, TCS. The exam centres varied from 12 to 15 across Bengal, with the two Kolkata centres being at TCS Gitabitan and Belghoria.

On Sunday, in the first half, 632 students turned up at Gitabitan for the test out of 1,684 who had registered. In the second half, the number fell to 577. This was the lowest after the numbers had somewhat picked up from the second day.

On Saturday, too, the figures at Gitabitan remained at 46% with just 778 and 788 candidates appearing in the two shifts out of 1,686 who had registered.
