CHENNAI: Prices of most of vegetables will go up by Rs 10 a kilogram at the wholesale market but two vegetables will become cheaper this week, said traders.
According to wholesale market traders, price of small onions will increase by Rs 20 due to shortage in arrivals. Small onions are largely procured from Trichy, Perambalur and Pollachi.
V R Soundararajan, a wholesale onion trader and former member of the market management committee of Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex, said rain in parts of Tamil Nadu had damaged small onions leading to a spike in prices.
“All other vegetables, including potato, will become costlier by Rs 10 a kg. Potatoes will be sold at Rs 35 a kilogram in the wholesale market and one can expect the price to be Rs 45 a kg to Rs 50 a kg in retail markets,” he said.
But the price of brinjals and okra may come down. These vegetables are procured from Chengalpet, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur and Tiruvannamalai districts and arrivals are expected to be steady. “The price of vegetable will remain thus till Diwali,” Soundararajan said.
