NEW DELHI: Congress on Monday slammed the Modi government for failing to control the spread of the
coronavirus in the country, likening PM Modi with
Roman emperor Nero and claiming that like
Nero “fiddled while
Rome burnt”, PM Modi “played with peacocks” while the GDP tanked and coronavirus spread like wildfire.
With India, only second in the World after the USA on account of its coronavirus caseload, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said, “Instead of looking for solutions after pushing the country into a dangerous situation, the Modi government acts like an ostrich…India is leading the World in all the wrong races, whether it is coronavirus or the decline in GDP.”
Congress also alleged the government has left people to fend for themselves and that it was the BJP government’s “indifference, ineptitude and failed leadership” that were responsible for the prevailing conditions.
Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said that despite repeated warnings, the government could not
rein in the
pandemic by adhering to the policy of ‘Test-Trace-Isolate-Treat’. “Prime Minister Modi must answer the nation on the strategy going forward,” he said.
Surjewala also took a dig at the government for calling
Covid and its impact on the economy an ‘Act of God’. Emphasising the need for invoking a scientific temper to tackle the coronavirus problem, Surjewala asked whether the government will restore the sinking economy and has a solution for it or “will it blame God for it”.
