Crime rate in Salcete increases in last seven months

Margao : The crime rate in Salcete taluka comprising of sixty-six villages is slowly rising with reports of seven  murders including the daylight  brutal murder of Sapnil  Walke (41) a resident of Margao.

Some parts of Margao and Fatorda have become the headquarters of muscle power activities and needs to be checked since criminals are seen moving in broad daylight committing crime.   Besides this, gambling, sex trade, snatching of gold chain, is raising its ugly head in Salcete. 

The general public feels that strict measures are required by Margao police to bring such crimes under control. Police have to apprehend these criminals and send a strong message, said a prominent citizen.

According to information available this year since January to September 2, 2020 in Salcete, in all 8 murders took place. In the end of August a murder took place at Raia while within two days the brutal murder of Walke took place in Margao on September 2.

Out of the eight murders, three murders took place in Maina Curtorim police jurisdiction while one murder took place in Margao, one each at Colva, Cuncolim,   and Fatorda.

Margao sub division covers police stations like Margao, Maina Curtorim, Colva, Fatorda and Cuncolim and most of these places are muscle power activities and scooter thefts dominate these areas.

As per police figures since March 20, 2019, till June 2020 in all 738 crime cases were reported in Margao sub division of which 647 cases have been detected. The detection rate is 87.66 percent, out of these 738 cases, 448 cases have been chargesheeted. 

According to sources in police during the above period in all nine murder cases were reported in Salcete taluka of which all were detected, while 10 attempts to murder cases were reported and all were solved.
