A 25-year-old man was allegedly killed by two men who he met on a dating app, in Southeast Delhi’s Sarita Vihar on Saturday. With the help of a WhatsApp display photo and call detail records, the accused were arrested within a day, police said. Police said the accused had been using the dating app to target and rob men.

The victim, Sunny Dayal, worked with Volvo buses as pantry staff. His body was found in Aali Vihar on Saturday night.

R P Meena, DCP (Southeast), said, “Locals found a man’s body in the jungle on Sunday morning with stab wounds. Local police rushed to the spot, identified him and initiated a probe.”

Police couldn’t find Dayal’s phone, which was switched off, but they found the SIM number. “We traced the last location before the phone was switched off and found that Dayal was in Badarpur. Call detail records of the phone were also checked and we found that Dayal was in constant touch with a man. With the help of WhatsApp, we saw the man’s display picture and he was identified as Arjun Kumar, a resident of Gautampuri,” said a senior police officer.

Kumar told police that his phone is used by his friend Sumit, who lives near his house. The police team arrested Sumit from his house. During interrogation, the man confessed to the crime and said he met Dayal on a dating app called Blued.

Police said he allegedly killed Dayal with the help of his friend Karthik, said police. Karthik was also arrested from the same locality. The accused told police that they created an ID on the app and planned to target and rob men they met there.

“The two started speaking to Dayal on the app and later invited him to meet them in Sarita Vihar. The men took Dayal on their bike to a jungle. Once there, they tried to snatch his phone, but when he resisted, they threatened him with a knife and stabbed him to death,” said police. The two left him in the jungle and fled the spot.

A case has been registered against the two under sections of robbery and murder. Karthik is involved in four cases of violence, attempt to murder and theft, police said.
