Representative imageSURAT: A special court for cases registered under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act convicted a 27-year-old man for rape of a two-year-old girl here on Friday and sentenced him to imprisonment till death. In the brutal crime the convict seriously injured the minor and doctors who examined her informed the court during hearing that the child would have died. The minor remained abandoned, partially without clothes, in a sugarcane farm for over 18 hours after the crime.
Within 18 months of the crime the accused was convicted despite the courts not working to its full strength since March due to lockdown and global pandemic. The survivor was raped on March 11, 2019 in Amroli area.
The court of P S Kala, additional sessions judge, convicted Shatrughna alias Bijli Mahantray Yadav, a labourer, who lived in neighbouring home to the survivor. “The court announced maximum punishment considering the brutality of the crime,” public prosecutor, Kishore Revaliya, told TOI.
In the incident, the survivor, daughter of a mason, was kidnapped by the convict from outside her hut when her mother went inside for a few minutes. Yadav took her to a nearby sugarcane farm and raped her. He abandoned her in the farm where the girl spent the entire night crying and bleeding. She was found next morning by a farm labourer.
Sources in police informed that the survivor was heavily drunk when he kidnapped the minor and raped her.
