There are reports another man is inside a home with gunshot wounds.

Mick Buckley, who has lived in the area for 40 years, said he heard a helicopter flying overhead just after 1pm but did not hear anything leading up to the incident.

"It’s a bit of a shock; it’s a quiet street," he said.

Residents have been told by police they would be unable to enter the street, and those surrounding it, for several hours.

Inner West Police Area Command acting Superintendent Despa Fitzgerald said police were appealing for information, including who the victim was and if he had been with another person before the incident.

"The plan is to continue our canvass, establish the identity of the deceased and any witnesses and potential suspects," she said.

She added that no weapon had been found.

A woman has been taken by police for questioning. Police say she was a witness.
