CHENNAI: After a gap of four months, the Tamil Nadu government will resume distribution of eggs under the Puratchi Thalaivar MGR-Nutritious Meal programme to school students this month.
It would benefit 34 lakh primary and high school students.
However, the government has reduced the number of eggs by half for a month.
Under the scheme, students would be supplied with boiled or masala eggs along with a variety of rice on all working days.
“Until school reopens, 10 eggs a month will be distributed to each beneficiary,” stated secretary of social welfare department S Madumathi in an order issued on Friday.
Following the Madras high court direction, the government has taken the measure and passed the order. It says 20.38 lakh primary school students, 13.61 lakh students of upper primary classes and 4,746 students of special schools functioning under the national child labourer project scheme will benefit from the scheme.
Collectors are instructed to make arrangements for the distribution of eggs with the help of teachers following the standard operating procedure.
“We will distribute the eggs twice a week from the noon meal centres,” said commissioner of the department T Abhraham.
Parents or guardians of the students can collect the eggs along with dry ration.
