1,553 fresh Covid cases, 1,950 recoveries in Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The state on Thursday reported 1,553 new cases and 1,950 recoveries. The total Covid cases reported in the state go up to 79,625 while 21,516 are active.
Ten more deaths were recorded in the state taking the total death toll due to Covid-19 to 316. The deceased are Lochannan (93), Krishnan Assari (86), Nirmala (60), Rajendran (52), Biju Kumar (45), Sibi (29) and Shanta (75) from Thiruvananthapuram, Yashoda (84) from Kannur, Mohammad Haji (71) from Palakkad and Thankam Menon (81) from Ernakulam. Among the new cases 1,435 people were infected through contact and the source of infection of 156 is unknown. There were 317 cases from Thiruvananthapuram, 164 from Ernakulam, 160 from Kottayam, 133 from Kasargod, 131 from Kozhikode, 118 from Pathanamthitta, 93 from Thrissur, 91 from Malappuram, 87 in Alappuzha, 74 from Kannur, 65 in Kollam, 58 from Palakkad, 44 in Idukki and 18 from Wayanad.
Precaution is ‘vaccine’: CM
Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan said precaution is the only vaccine available for use against this pandemic. The spreading is likely to increase in the coming days and the next 14 days will be crucial. “If you ask how long we will have to take the precaution, then we can only say that until a vaccine is available. Till then precaution is the social vaccine,’’ said the chief minister.
“If the spread increases among senior citizens then it might lead to more deaths. We have to be extra cautious during this period. We have been able to check the rapid spread and also bring down the deaths. The experts had pointed out that the cases might peak to 10,000 during this time,’’ said the chief minister.
Jr docs’ pay cut to stay
The chief minister said the government will not reconsider the decision to have pay cuts for the salary challenge in the salaries given to the temporarily appointed junior doctors exclusively for Covid-19 duty. The junior doctors have given their resignation in protest against the pay cuts and they had urged the government to reconsider the decision. The doctors were offered Rs 42,000 and have been paid only Rs 27,000 after the pay cut.
