Bengaluru: Cop dons teacher’s role for kids in slum

Minister S Suresh Kumar visited PSI Shantappa Jadammanavar’s class on Thursday morning
BENGALURU: On his way to work every morning, police sub-inspector Shantappa Jadammanavar from Annapoorneshwari Nagar police station stops at a neighbourhood slum in Vinayak Nagar, Nagarbhavi, at 7am. About 40 children gather around him and he dons a teacher’s role for the next one hour.
Shantappa, 30, has been taking classes for children from this neighbourhood over the past 15 days in an open space in that area. He had also helped the families with groceries and healthcare during the lockdown.
SI educates slum kids on sexual abuse too
Sub-inspector Shantappa Jadammanavar realised that students must be engaged with learning since schools have been shut since March.
“I teach them Vedic Maths, simple science and general knowledge. Besides narrating motivational stories so that they want to study and get a job, I sensitise them on sexual abuse and child marriages,” he said.
About his motivation to do something beyond the call of duty, he said: “I’ve been in their situation. I’m from Ballari and lost my father early. My uncle was working in Bengaluru as a migrant daily wage labourer after he was under debt with farming, and I joined him during Class 9 holidays. I went back to Ballari, completed school, graduated in BSc and then got selected for the police department.”
Shantappa said he ensures he finds time to teach the students every day. “I was on duty till 4am Thursday. But I ensured I reach out to the children in the morning. It’s all about priorities, If I’m unable to teach them a day, I give them homework. I promise them gifts like geometry box or a bag or book if they do well in class,” he added.
According to him, being in police, two things can be done. “ Ensure law and order and create good human beings. This can happen only through education. In a way, this teaching is my part of his duty,” he said.
