NOIDA: A fourth-year B.Tech student of Amity University who had gone for a late-night drive suffered serious injuries after being hit several times with a pistol butt by some assailants who fled with his car.
The incident took place near Varun Apartments in Sector 62 late on Wednesday night.
The victim, 25-year-old Akshay Kalra, currently in the ICU of a private hospital, is a thalassemia patient and had undergone blood transfusion on Monday, one of his relatives said.
His condition is stated to be serious as he has suffered a lot of blood loss.
Police said Akshay had left his house around 10.45pm on Wednesday for a drive in his Hyundai Creta. His father, Gulshan Kalra, who is a senior executive of LIC Kanpur, spoke to him around 9.30pm.
“He wanted to go for a car ride and asked his mother to accompany him but she refused. So he went off alone. Around 12:30 am, we received a call from police that he had been found severely injured and lying unconscious on the road. We informed them that he was in his Creta but they said there was no car around. I requested them to take him to the hospital,” he said.
Police said before he lost consciousness, Akshay told them he had been assaulted multiple times with a pistol’s butt and hit on the head, his chest and his ribcage. After this, the accused had dumped him near the D park of Sector 62.
DCP (Noida) Rajesh S said that a PCR van, which had been patrolling nearby, got him admitted to the hospital after which his parents were informed.
“Initial questioning has revealed that Akshay’s car was stopped with some motive. He has a severe head injury,” he said.
So far, no arrests have been made and the accused are yet to be identified.
An FIR has been lodged against unknown persons under IPC sections 392 (robbery) and 304A (attempt to murder). Police said they are scanning CCTV footage from societies in the area.
They said that a car resembling Akshay’s Creta can be seen in it, but it is yet to be verified.
ACP Rajnish Verma told TOI that given the nature of injuries and the initial questioning, it seemed like there were at least three attackers, but they were still in the process of verifying it.
