5 ways to nail September suiting like the street-style set

Even if you’re still WFH, a tailoring style tip or two can’t hurt

Finding a suit that fits perfectly—without a dragging hem, extended cuff or taut shoulder seam in sight—is no mean feat. Sourcing one that actually suits you, too, is not easy. But when you do (finally) hit on a razor sharp, crisp suit good enough to be designated a future heirloom, the laborious search will have been worth it—e-store trawls, Instagram scrolls, eBay bids and all.

This season, it’s all about keeping three Ls in mind: louche, laid-back and long-lasting. Then, of course, there’s a fourth aspirational L in the suiting lexicon – laissez-faire. Because the perfect suit always looks effortless.

Sure, at-home office spaces don’t exactly offer ample opportunity to flex your tailoring prowess in front of your colleagues – after all, the winning lockdown style approach was waist-up dressing (see Rosie Huntington-Whiteley’s enviable collection of Zoom-friendly jewels and silky shirts for details). But what would September – with all of its back-to-school vibes – be without a worthy new addition to your work wardrobe? Below, five suit styling tips from the street-style set to take on board this autumn.

Pastels aren’t just for spring

Don’t be afraid to deviate from the traditional autumn palette of burgundy, caramel and camel. Life needs a little lightness right now.

Try a shorts suit for warmer autumn days

Should we get an Indian summer (here’s hoping), immediately make 2006 Kate Moss your tailoring muse.

Mix and match for maximum effect

Keep things casual by mixing and matching – try a blazer with tailored leather trousers.
