Curbs on Teachers’ Day celebrations for pandemic
Image is used for representational purpose only. GUWAHATI: Teachers’ Day celebrations in the state may have been hit by closure of educational institutions, but the government has green-lighted official functions, though with some curbs.
The state level function here will be limited to the presence of 150 participants in view of the pandemic. As per the minutes of a high-level meeting convened by the education department, district education authorities will have to confine the district level functions to 50 teachers. As a practice, the government gives away awards for excellence to teachers on this occasion.
The state-level function, which is the focal point of the celebrations, is usually addressed by the chief minister and education minister. This year the programme will be organised at the Srimanta Sankardev International Auditorium at Kalakhetra in Panjabari here with riders like “teachers, not exceeding 150, will be present ... along with other dignitaries”.
“The State awardees and certificate winning teachers of schools and colleges/Head of Institutions will be invited on the occasion,” read the minutes of the education department meeting. Heads of 10 institutions (schools) will be selected for felicitation. “The criteria for selection will be based on the performance of the school in the last five years and with a minimum enrolment of 25 students,” it added.
The directives issued by the commissioner and secretary of the education department, Preetom Saikia, stated that there will not be any cultural programme. Serving of meals and other such recreations have also been prohibited. The district magistrates, inspector of schools, district level education officers and heads of educational institutions have been instructed to conduct the functions with strict adherence to Covid-19 protocols and the directives issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), health and family welfare and home departments.
Saikia said heads of schools, which have produced rank holders in the Class X and XII state board examinations this year, will be felicitated keeping social distancing in mind. “The rank holders will also be felicitated by the deputy commissioners,” Saikia said.
In each district, a meeting will be organized by the respective deputy commissioner, involving the inspector of schools, district level education officers and heads of educational institutions along with principals and headmasters of five schools.
It has also been directed to the deputy commissioners, inspector of schools as well as district and block level elementary education officers to take the initiative to ask schoolchildren to write a letter to their favourite teachers on the subject, “My teacher, my inspiration”. The letters will be dropped in the drop boxes installed in the schools and they will be posted online on websites as there will not be any physical interaction between the students and teachers on the occasion.
