Covid-19: Dakshina Kannada crosses 14k mark, 4k fresh cases within fortnight

MANGALURU: Dakshina Kannada district on Friday saw its Covid-19 caseload cross the 14,000 mark with a jump of over 4,000 fresh cases within a fortnight.
The district had crossed 10,000 mark adding 228 fresh cases that took the total to 10,137 on August 22. After 13 days, the district added 428 fresh cases of coronavirus infection taking the total number of cases to 14,223 on Friday. Meanwhile, the coastal district also reported seven fatalities taking the Covid-19 death tally to 391. Out of seven deaths, four are from Mangaluru taluk, followed by one from Puttur and two from other districts.
While there are 2,904 active cases in Dakshina Kannada district as on date, the day also saw 222 people getting discharged after treatment from various hospitals, home isolation and covid care centres. Out of 428 fresh cases reported on Friday, 222 are from Mangaluru taluk, 61 from Bantwal, 54 from Puttur, 45 from Sullia, 28 from Belthangady and 18 are natives of other districts.
Fresh cases include 201 asymptomatic and 227 symptomatic. While 41 have contracted the virus through contacts, the source of infection in 168 are yet to be investigated.
Udupi district reported 186 fresh cases of Covid-19 on Friday taking the total number of cases to 12,336. While the district has 1,967 active cases, 332 persons have been discharged after completing the treatment. So far, 10,261 persons have been discharged from various hospitals and home isolation from the district.
The district also reported two Covid-19 related deaths, one from Udupi and another in Kundapur, taking the total number of fatalities to 108.
Meanwhile, former minister and Congress leader Pramod Madhwaraj appealed to people of Udupi district to get tested for Covid-19 immediately if they have any symptoms. “Undergo test immediately when you have any of the symptoms of Covid-19 and help the health department to prevent the spread of disease in the district,” he appealed to people.
