KOLKATA: The Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation authorities are taking up work to clean up all the vacant plots in and around Salt Lake to prevent mosquito breeding.
The civic authorities will also send notices to the leaseholders of the plots to elicit their plans on constructions. The canals flowing in Salt Lake and Rajarhat will also be cleaned up. Hakim also held a meeting with irrigation officials on Thursday to take stock of the situation.
Bidhannagar MMiC (health) Pranay Roy said civic authorities will charge the vacant plot holders for the clean up. "The civic body will clean up the vacant plots. However, we shall charge the lease holders for the clean up, which they would need to pay while clearing their property tax dues for the next quarter," Roy said.
The civic authorities had a meeting with state urban development and municipal affairs department minister Firhad Hakim, in which vector-borne disease control measures in Bidhannagar area were discussed.
Officials said there are several vacant plots in the township that are filled with garbage. These are potential mosquito-breeding grounds. "The irrigation department has been requested to clean up the canals as the civic body is spraying larvicide. Guppy fish will be released in the canals to prevent mosquito breeding," the official said.
