Students ‘zoom’ on virtual events, gifts

Students of various schools from across the state, whom TOI spoke to, said they were sad that there will be no “usual events” this time around, but added that they were ready to do their best to give it back to the teachers, albeit virtually.
Students from various schools are rehearsing songs, dance performances and creative arts for teachers through social networking platforms. Though physical coordination will be absent, but students said they were ensuring that they are in constant touch with their peers to ensure they are all at their best.
Teachers said this year’s Teachers’ Das would be “exceptional”.
“This year is exceptional because of the ongoing pandemic and nothing can be done, as educational institutions are closed and we all are under “stay home, stay safe”. Looking forward to how students are going to celebrate online. All these will be an entirely new experience for all of us. We are really missing students and especially the warmth they convey through their zest and zeal on the occasion every year,” said Sarmistha Chakraborty, social science teacher at Maharishi Vidya Mandir, Barsajai.
She was hopeful that the enthusiasm will be reflected through the efforts of students. “We believe there will be a lot of innovation and whatever they do, we will enjoy to our fullest,” said Chakraborty.
In some city schools, the celebrations will take place virtually. “I will present a cultural speech through video mode, utilising the virtual platform. Maybe we will have a live programme through zoom where we will express our gratitude to teachers. Some may present musical and cultural performances,” Maithili Goswami, a Class XI student from South Point School, Guwahati. Fearing the virus threat, she said they could not dispatch gifts to the teachers, who may not feel comfortable receiving the parcels.
To avoid mass gathering, the state education department has already decided to celebrate Teacher's Day this year on a virtual platform, emphasising the aspect of “augmented reality”. The state education department has decided to prepare a souvenir in the form of an e-magazine and go for printing limited copies.
In Kamrup district, an e-magazine “e-Kamrupika” will be launched on September 5, which will portray the writing of the academics on the online platform. “Despite the Covid-19 threat, we will award 18 teachers from Kamrup district for their services. Maintaining health protocols, we would observe the day and recognise the contributions of the teachers,” said Apurba Thakuria, district elementary education officer, Kamrup.
