In Jammu and Kashmir, a militant was killed in an encounter between militants and security forces during a siege and search operation in Baramulla district on Friday morning, although an army major was injured in the shootout.

Official sources said that on receiving intelligence about the presence of terrorists, personnel of Rashtriya Rifles, Jammu and Kashmir Special Operations Group and Central Reserve Police Force started a joint operation at Yedipora, PS in Baramulla around 6 am today.

After sealing all exit routes, security forces launched a door-to-door search operation. He said that when the security forces were moving towards the targeted place, the terrorists hiding there started indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons. The security forces also retaliated after which the encounter started.

An army major was injured in the initial firing of terrorists. He has been identified as Major Rohit Mehra of 29 Rashtriya Rifles. He is admitted to the military hospital. The campaign was on till the final report was received.

A local resident said that the security forces asked the people living near the encounter site to move to safer places. As the people evacuated the area, the security forces took over from inside the houses. A terrorist was killed in the shootout, although his body has not yet been recovered.

Sources said that two to three militants are present in the area. Additional security forces and police personnel have been deployed in the neighboring areas to maintain law and order.
