This 1980s Honda Civic With A Mid-Placed Acura 3.2L V6 And RWD Is Like No Other

A wild mid-engined Honda Civic is currently up for auction and is certainly one of the most intriguing hot hatches you’re ever likely to come across.

The intriguing Civic was created by hot rod builder Andy Barcheck between 1987 and 1992 and inspired by the iconic mid-engined Renault 5. As such, the car features a custom-fabricated rear subframe that uses a 3.2-liter naturally-aspirated VTEC V6 engine from an Acura CL Type S. Mated to this engine is a six-speed manual transmission.

The Bring A Trailer listing reveals the car was first built with a mid-mounted 2.5-liter Acura engine but that this was replaced with the 3.2-liter unit by the seller. No mention has been made about how much power the custom Civic has but we know the drivetrain sits on a custom rear subframe and also includes various suspension parts based on Datsun 240Z components. This includes custom adjustable rear A-arms, coilovers at all four corners, and new CV joints and axles.

As part of the mid-engined swap, the fuel tank was relocated up front to where the engine once was. Also found under the hood is the battery, a tool box, a collapsible spare wheel and a strut tower brace with adjustable camber plates. Meanwhile, the 3.2-liter engine is now mounted behind the seats in an insulated and carpeted compartment.

Custom bodywork further adds to the vehicle’s appeal and includes Renault 5-inspired box flares with straked vents and custom rocker panels. The car also has HID headlights and 15-inch Enkei wheels with Pirelli P Zero tires measuring 205/50 up front and 225/50 at the rear. The car also has five-lug hubs and four-wheel disc brakes with calipers sourced from a C4 Corvette.
