WA man arrested in Bali over alleged role in drug syndicate

A West Australian man faces up to 12 years in a Balinese jail after authorities allegedly caught him with a package of methamphetamine.

Aaron Wayne Coyle was detained by Denpasar police on Thursday morning, suspected of being a courier for a drug syndicate.

Mr Coyle had been living on the popular holiday island since February and was arrested alongside a 32-year-old British national.

Police claim Mr Coyle was caught with a package of ice weighing 1.23 grams, while the 32-year-old British man allegedly had 14 packages containing methamphetamine and ecstasy.

Footage captured by Nine News crews in Indonesia shows a handcuffed Mr Coyle dressed in a black singlet and shorts being escorted out of a police station in front of local media.

The 44-year-old faces up to 12 years in prison for his alleged involvement in the scheme.

During a press conference on Thursday, Denpasar police chief Jansen Avitus Panjaitan said investigations into several local citizens had led police to the two foreign nationals.

Indonesia is renowned for its tough stand on illicit drugs, which led to the execution of Bali Nine ringleaders Myuran Sukumaran and Andrew Chan in 2015.
