Ponda: Delivering what was promised to the people of Priol, Art and Culture Minister Govind Gaude has announced that Mardol outpost will be converted to a full-fledged police station by December.
The existing premises of the police outpost will be upgraded to meet the requirements of a police station. The minister made this announcement following an inspection of the outpost premises.
Ponda is a vast area and having another police station is the need of the hour, he said, adding, taking that into consideration, the government has decided to set up a full-fledged
police station.
Gaude said that it will strengthen policing in the area and also reduce workload of the Ponda police station. The minister stated that temporarily the outpost will be upgraded with lockups for male-female. And then the police station will be shifted to a new premises at Mangueshi where land admeasuring around 3500 square metre has been acquired, Gaude stated.
With a population of 1.5 lakh spread across 315 square kms, the entire Ponda taluka has been provided with only one police station at Ponda, with seven police outposts at Bethora, Usgao, Kundaim, Mardol, Shiroda, Marcela and Farmagudi.
Ponda being the main police station, people have to travel almost 15 kms to register a complaint or for police to investigate crime cases. On an average, around 35 cases are registered with Ponda police each month. Besides, Ponda police station jurisdiction witnesses the highest number of road accidents and unnatural death cases.
